Design is a plan or a framework, which is one, prepares to show how an object, building or garment will look and function before it is completed. On the other hand, activism the act of using vigor campaign to bring about social or political change. Therefore, design activism denotes innovative practices, which invoke political, environmental and social agency. It is the response to a particular state of contemporary conditions in social geo-political fields.

Design project: Drug abuse; Design and activism in print media

Print media refer to newsletters, newspapers and magazines; they are a venue, which is getting to large groups of people. They are for communicating issues regularly.

It is general knowledge that substance abuse is the unregulated excessive or under use of drugs also referred to as drug abuse. People who think they will help escape the agonies of real life use the drugs. Through media, the negative effects of substance are exposed, and people are sanitized. This is as a result of the catchy designs of palm lets and flyers, which pull and interest people to read.

Drug abuse touches an estimate of 78.1 million people each year worldwide. A large percentage of these people struggle with alcohol abuse related disorders translating to about two million deaths every year. Most of the victims are youths of fifteen years and above. This translates to a dark future for the youth where the world is losing the next generation. For this reason, anti-drug activist and pro-life organization have forced drug manufacturing companies, for example, alcohol and cigarette companies to include warnings on their products that state the harm, which can be caused by excessive use of their product to the health of the consumer. They have also created design and pictorial images, which show the effects of the substances.

Design Project: Direct to consumer adverts; design and activism in installation

Installation is simply an artistic genre that describes a three-dimensional work that is often site-specific and usually designed to transform perception of space. Installation can either be   temporary or permanent. Its artworks have been used in exhibition spaces such as museums and galleries. It has also been used in private and public spaces.

Drug advertising has a profound effect to patients depending on the way it was described by the doctor. Companies dealing with drugs have invested billions of money into direct-to-consumer advertising in the US. Countries such as UK do not permit advertising to patients directly. Critics and anti-drugs activist have been charged on the DTC advertising which may lead to over-prescribing which can be harmful potentially. US research studies shows that actors consulting doctors who mention an antidepressant, particularly on television are more likely to get to that prescription if they do not request any medication.

Researchers acknowledge these requests that they can prevent initial under-treatment of serious depression. DTC is a two way traffic that drives requests that seem effective at encouraging prescribing when drugs may not be needed. Pharmaceutical agencies argue that, DTC advertising is valuable. This advertisement helps us to fight the fact that, millions of people suffer from diseases, which are not detected nor treated, and still leave prescribing of life-saving therapies to doctors who understand patients. Most activists who are against the adverts have filed cases to the courts but this has not stopped pharmaceuticals companies from erecting and displaying well-designed billboards.

Wafaa Bilail: Virtual Jihadi

Virtual Jihadi is Video Game Mod of the First Person Shooter game “Quest for Saddam”. Quest for Saddam is game in which Players fight stereotyped Iraqi enemies until reaching the final boss battle: Saddam Hussein. Al-Qaeda re-skinned Quest for Saddam so that the goal is to hunt George W. Bush in “Night of Bush Capture”. Wafaa Bilal then hacked Night of Bush Capture.

Wafaa’s Brother Haji was killed a missile at a checkpoint in their hometown of Kufa, Iraq in 2004. In Virtual Jihadi, a fictional Wafaa Bilal is recruited by Al-Qaeda as a suicide bomber for their hunt for bush after learning the death of real Wafaa’s brother.

Virtual Jihadi is a critical study of Propaganda in a pervasive genre of entertainment, First Person Shooters. According to Wafaa Bilal’s website: “Virtual Jihadi is meant to bring attention to the vulnerability of Iraqi civilians to the travesties of the current war and racist generalizations and stereotypes as exhibited in games such as Quest for Saddam; along with vulnerability to recruitment by violent groups like Al Qaeda because of the U.S.’s failed strategy in securing Iraq. The work also aims to shed light on groups that traffic in crass and hateful stereotypes of Arab culture with games like Quest for Saddam and other media.”

Virtual Jihadi is also known for causing political controversy due shutting down an installation showing the game twice in the city of Troy, NY.

During Bilal’s residency at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), he was invited to show Virtual Jihadi by the art department as a part of an ongoing arts series. Weeks before the exhibition, RPI College Republicans wrote a blog post calling the art department a “terrorist safe haven” for hosting Bilal and Virtual Jihadi. The opening went by as scheduled, but was shut down the next day. RPI declined reopening Virtual Jihadi due to concerns about the game’s subject matter and Al-Qaeda link, insists he had fully disclosed the details of his exhibit with administrators beforehand.

After the Shutdown of the RPI exhibition, Bilal was invited to show Virtual Jihadi at the Sanctuary for Independent Media, a community arts center in downtown Troy.  Bob Mirch, Troy’s Public work commissioner and local Republican leader called for protests during the opening. The opening witnessed protests by both Mirch’s and Bilal’s supporters.  The next morning, the city ordered the Sanctuary to close operations due to building code violations, although less than 24 hours earlier, code-enforcement officials had cleared the building for use.

The New York Civil Liberties Union filed a federal lawsuit against that the city of Troy and its Public Works Commissioner, Bob Mirch, for suppressing free speech by shutting down the exhibition at Sanctuary for Independent Media.

[Hirumi: Graffiti Research Lab] (from Eyebeam) The Mobile Broadcast Unit with L.A.S.E.R Tag System (LTS) is the latest Open Source, Weapon of Mass Defacement developed by the Graffiti Research Lab in the Eyebeam R&D OpenLab. NYC! This tactical tool allows any citizen, graff writer, artist or protester to use a projector, camera and laser to write, in real-time, on large-scale surfaces and structures from a distance of 100’s of meters away. Citizens can post their art, messages and propaganda on a scale previously monopolized by advertisers, governments, major media, and other cultural tyrants. The BMU + LTS is self-contained and mobile, mounted on a giant trike. This unit has its own power supply, custom armatures and a 1200 watt audio system. Like previous work by the GRL, the MBU + LTS has been created as a tool to amplify the voices of everyday citizens and people in the fringe: artists, activists, pranksters and other undesirables in opposition to the dominant global cultural forces of consumerism, control and oppression.]

  1. Towards the end of class we mentioned another category: Games/ Performance. I’d like to make an entry for this category based on the flash mob culture and the role of this designed performance on social activism.
My entry could potentially be categorized in the public space or collaboration category also.
